Calliope's first ever Artists in Residence perform in celebration of their season's work
New Apollo Youth Symphony Orchestra is a nonprofit orchestra designed specifically to be accessible, and to serve youth of color and underserved youth. NAYSO became Calliope's first-ever artists in residence in the Spring of 2021.
NAYSO is led by violinist, teacher, and Bay Area native Shannon Houston. Mr. Houston teaches violin in the Berkeley public schools, driving all over the city to teach at multiple elementary schools, and also serves as the Orchestra Director at Longfellow Middle School, as well as Director of the City of Berkeley's summer music camps, BMuZ.
Creating and running NAYSO grew from his vision of supporting young musicians of color so that they continue with their instruments into high school and beyond. The orchestra is available at low or no cost to participants, depending on their means, and provides musical and instrumental instruction, rehearsal, mentorship and community.
Under Calliope's new Artists in Residency program, we provided NAYSO with a rehearsal space with fantastic acoustics - so important to being able to hear yourself and be able to tune in to the music and each other. We also provided them with the means to produce this final, celebratory concert, including a performance venue, Calliope's professional level broadcast equipment, and broadcast and technical support.
ALL THANKS TO SUPPORT FROM THE COMMUNITY - THANK YOU!
