Their music showcases newly rediscovered gems from Ashkenazi Jewish, Polish, Romanian, Ukrainian, and Hungarian folk music traditions, alongside many of their own compositions. Baymele features Matthew Stein on violin and viola, Misha Khalikulov on cello, and Dmitri Gaskin on accordion and piano.

Artist Profiles:
Matthew Stein is a violinist, violist, and composer based in Oakland. He studied ethnomusicology and computer science at Wesleyan University, where he founded and led a range of klezmer, Eastern European, Balkan, Irish, and classical ensembles. In the Bay Area, he has performed and recorded with klezmer trio Baymele, Romanian and Moldavian band Mahala, and Eastern European and klezmer band Orchestra Euphonos. He has been a long-time student and advocate of Yiddish language and culture, and he currently contributes to the NEH-backed Klezmer Archive project. Outside of music, Matthew was formerly a software engineer at YouTube before founding Enigmida, a puzzle experience design studio, in 2019. In collaboration with illustrators, writers, and engineers, he injects wonder into the mundane with custom escape rooms, alternate reality games, puzzle hunts, and immersive installations.
Misha Khalikulov is a cellist and music educator based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He holds a degree in Classical Cello Performance from UCLA under the tutelage of Antonio Lysy. He is a member of Rupa and the April Fishes, contemporary chamber/world music group StringQuake, Hungarian folk/crossover group Vadalma, and klezmer trio Baymele. In January 2019, playing both cello and electric bass, he joined Vietnamese folk artist Van-Anh Vo to create the Blood Moon Orchestra. The group traveled to Vietnam on a concert/university presentation tour sponsored by the US Embassy in Hanoi and Oxfam International. He performs and records as a solo cellist, electric bassist, guitarist, in classical chamber music ensembles, and with musicians and artists covering many musical genres and disciplines.
Dmitri Gaskin is an accomplished accordion player, composer, and arranger specializing in klezmer and Romanian folk music. He performs with several klezmer bands throughout the Bay Area, including Baymele, Tsvey Brider, and Saul Goodman's Klezmer Band, and has taught at KlezKalifornia. Outside of klezmer music, Dmitri won the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award for contemporary classical composition. He also formed Harmonikos, a performing collective of young composers and musicians. Dmitri has studied accordion with Josh Horowitz and Alan Bern.
